Housing instability during pregnancy is undoubtedly one of the most challenging circumstances a parent can face. While you may be able to secure temporary housing with family members or friends, you will likely eventually want a place for your own family. Below, we have listed resources and organizations that can help you make a start towards securing your own place.


HUD Rental Assistance

Privately owned subsidized housing: HUD helps apartment owners offer reduced rents to low-income tenants. Search for an apartment and apply directly at the management office

Public Housing: Affordable apartments for low-income families, the elderly and persons with disabilities. To apply, contact a public housing agency.

Housing Choice Voucher Program (Section 8): Find your own place and use the voucher to pay for all or part of the rent. To apply, contact a public housing agency.

HUD Resource Locator: Search for HUD field and regional offices, local PHAs, Multifamily and Public Housing locations, homeless coordinated entry system points of contacts, and USDA rural housing.

Local Renting Information: Rental help in your state. Find affordable rentals and special needs housing, get help with your utility bills, and more

Properties with Low Income Housing Tax Credits (LIHTC): If you are looking for affordable housing in which to live this site may be used to locate rental housing supported by the LIHTC and having the applicable program rent and income restrictions.

Off the Streets

Off the Streets is made up of volunteers organized into chapters in local communities.  We fill critical missing pieces to transition those who are homeless into housing. Our model is simple and flexible.  With the right support, the transition from homeless to housed can happen in as quickly as one or two days.  We are a 501(c)(3) with no paid staff. We take no government funding and have minimal overhead costs. All money, furniture, and other household goods are donated.  As of January 2020, Off the Streets has local chapters in California, Connecticut, and Pennsylvania.
